​The Great Speckled Bird Volume Three, Issue Twenty May 18, 1970

The Great Speckled Bird, a youth oriented underground newspaper based in Atlanta, was a platform for progressive college students known as the “New Left” to report on current events like anti-war movements, pop-culture, and racism. Sally Gabb, a founder of the newspaper, claims she wanted to provide people with “irreverent alternative reporting.” Student authors of The Bird introduced a radical in-your-face style of news in the South. The New Lefts movement of underground press was a resistance to the traditional values held by conventional news sources. While establishing a progressive style, The Bird changed how young Americans would view ongoing issues in the world.
